We haven’t been silent- we’ve been listening & learning
Thank you to all of our customers who have reached out to us asking about our efforts to be more inclusive and keeping us accountable. It was important for us to take time to do a few things before we added our voices to the discussion around the value of black lives in this country:
- We had to reflect on how we as individuals feel about the critical mass we’ve reached regarding racial injustice in this country and how we got here.
- We had to give our employees of color space to process their trauma and take care of their mental health.
- We needed to come together as an organization to have frank and honest conversations about how our company has privileges and advantages based on our races, genders, nationality, and class.
- We needed to discuss what impact we’ve had on increasing diversity and representation in this space and decide what we are willing to commit to doing using the power we have to influence the specialty coffee community.
Coffee roasters do so much to uplift their communities and by supporting small, local roasters of color we can support and invest in those communities as well. We proudly work with Portrait Coffee out of Atlanta, Georgia which is pouring a new narrative in the specialty industry. Learn more here. We continue to seek out the best coffee and look forward to bringing you more options from Black, POC, LGBTQ+, and Indigenous roasters. It won’t be easy and we won’t be perfect, but we are committing to doing the long-term, infrastructural work to uplift marginalized people in the specialty coffee community and showcase more diversity in this space.
Sprudge has compiled a great list of black-owned coffee businesses we encourage everyone to support on an ongoing basis. Additionally, many of our roasters are using their platforms to support communities of color.
We've outlined a list below:
Anodyne, Alma, Ceremony, Bixby, Case, Cat & Cloud, Caffe Vita, Caffe Ladro, Camber, Coava, Colectivo, Equator, Goshen, Good Folks, Greenway, Higher Grounds, Huckleberry, Wonderstate, Klatch, Kaldi's Coffee, Kuma, Metic, Onyx, Olympia, Panther, Parisi, Populace, Quills, Red Rooster, Ruby, Sisters, Spyhouse, Steadfast, Tandem, 1000 Faces, Thou Mayest, Topeca, Verve
As for our work, in addition to bringing more BIPOC roasters on board, we have identified several other areas internally and externally where we can improve.
Please continue to keep us and each other accountable for following through on the promises delivered this month.
Emphatically saying Black Lives Matter,
Connor, Rhi, Tyler, and Bailey
